I recently joined the Art House Co-Op’s Sketchbook Project. When you sign up, you are sent a sketchbook and are given a randomly selected theme for your book. My theme is “the other side of the tracks”, which got me thinking about vintage train travel. This was a time when travel was a glamorous event, worthy of a new dress, hat, gloves, and flawlessly styled hair. Today, travel is more about convenience and speed, getting where we need to go as quickly and easily as possible. And while I appreciate the advances made which allow us to get to our destinations with little hastle, some day I hope to take a long train trip, where the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination.
