Now that you have been practicing your dance moves, you are probably trying to figure out what to wear to complete your vintage 40’s look.  Because of the war, fabric was limited, so women were encouraged to “mend and make do.”  Dresses were slimmer, fell below the knee, and waistlines hit at the natural waist.  The broad shoulder look was influenced by the military, and by the fact that many women turned their husbands’ old suits into suits for them!  Nylon stockings first appeared in 1940, but when nylon was rationed for the war effort, women used stocking paint and drew lines up the back of their legs to give the look of stocking seams.  Hats were often small and military inspired.  For even more fashion info, check out one of my new favorite blogs, Glamour Daze.
