Poster madness!

I feel like I have been posting a lot of vintage posters recently, but I just love them!  Making a poster now is no big deal.  We just get on the computer, arrange a few things, and suddenly it’s done (I am not complaining about that, especially when I need a poster for one of my events!).  The problem is that they are not works of art any more, but just something quickly put together to get the message out.  I think that vintage posters, while they had a very clear message that they were trying to portray, were really works of art in themselves.  My recent obsession with vintage posters has led me to want to design and paint some myself.  I will be posting these over on my painting blog soon, but in the meantime, check out a few of my favorite vintage movie posters I have recently come across.

Even the best laid plans…

So, last night I got all dressed up to go to a New Years Eve party downtown where a friend’s band was playing.  I went out to my car only to discover that I had a flat tire.  It was pretty late by that point, and I wasn’t able to get a hold of anyone to come pick me up for the party, so I ended up spending the evening sitting on the couch, in my fancy outfit and hair, eating chocolate and watching a marathon of The Thin Man movies on TCM. (not a bad evening, but just not what I had planned.)

I was finally able to get my hair in to some form of victory rolls, thanks to this tutorial:

I don’t think her method is completely authentic, but it gives you the look and is really easy to do!  Here is what the final product looked like, even though I am the only one who saw it last night

And, I have to say after watching a lot of Thin Man last night, I adore Myrna Loy!  She always looked so beautiful and sophisticated, but she was also really funny.  I was reading a bio of her recently and was interested to learn that early in her career, she was typically cast as an “exotic”, made to look like she was of Asian decent.  The Thin Man movies helped break her out of that stereotype and into comedic roles.

Joyeux Noel

Last night I watched Joyeux Noel, a 2005 Academy Award Nominee for Best Foreign Language Film.  If you want to watch a movie that really captures the meaning of Christmas, go out and rent this film today!  It is set in 1914 and tells the story of  one Christmas night during WWI when enemies were able to lay aside their differences, visit each others trenches and celebrate the holiday.  Diane Kruger is beautiful in it, and I adore her clothes.  I have never paid much attention to 1910’s and 20’s fashion, but recently I have been drawn to their silhouette.  So, watch this movie, and Joyeux Noel!

I’m Dreaming…

A couple of nights ago I was watching White Christmas.  I have to say that is one of my favorite Christmas movies.  The music, the dancing, the clothes…I just love it all.  I could watch Vera Ellen dance all day, and I am thinking of convincing one of my sisters to put together an act with me so that we can do that “Sisters” song…

But most of all, I am determined to one day have a dress just like the one Rosemary Clooney wears when she sings “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me.”

If I had loved during this time period I would want to be a singer at a club like this.  To wear beautiful dresses and sing beautiful songs every night would be my idea of the good life.

Inspiring Icons: Ingrid Bergman

I don’t think I have ever mentioned how much I adore Ingrid Bergman.  Basically, if she is in a movie, I will watch it.  I was re-watching Gaslight recently.  Creepy stuff!  Although, even as a woman slowly being driven mad by her own husband, she is still always beautiful and stylish.

Darn technology!

My computer is having major problems this evening, and I can’t get Google to load to check my email, search for photos, or even scroll through my blog reader.  I have absolutely no patience for technology that doesn’t work right, but I also feel totally lost without it.  So, instead of browsing through my favorite blogs and doing my planned post on the movie His Girl Friday, I am going to dream about the days gone by when folks didn’t have to worry about malfunctioning computers and down email.  And, I am simply going to remind you to go see His Girl Friday at West End Movies here in Greenville tomorrow night.  You will be glad you did!

So, before I yell at my computer one more time and shut it down before I am tempted to throw it out the window, here is another of my favorite photos from Square America.

Blogger of the Week: Libemarlene Vintage

This week’s blogger of the week is Rhiannon of Lebemarlene Vintage.  She always has the most beautiful photos, great vintage finds, and stories from her travels around the southeast.  Since I grew up outside of Atlanta, I love seeing her pics of the city and the nearby small towns.  And, I am always pining over the gorgeous dresses in her shop.  So, click on the link above and check it out!

I’ll do a post about this movie later in the week, but go ahead and mark your calendars, because West End Movies is showing one of my favorite movies, His Girl Friday, this Friday, August 28 at 8pm.  This is such a funny and entertaining movie, and for a mere $5.
