Poster madness!

I feel like I have been posting a lot of vintage posters recently, but I just love them!  Making a poster now is no big deal.  We just get on the computer, arrange a few things, and suddenly it’s done (I am not complaining about that, especially when I need a poster for one of my events!).  The problem is that they are not works of art any more, but just something quickly put together to get the message out.  I think that vintage posters, while they had a very clear message that they were trying to portray, were really works of art in themselves.  My recent obsession with vintage posters has led me to want to design and paint some myself.  I will be posting these over on my painting blog soon, but in the meantime, check out a few of my favorite vintage movie posters I have recently come across.

I’m Dreaming…

A couple of nights ago I was watching White Christmas.  I have to say that is one of my favorite Christmas movies.  The music, the dancing, the clothes…I just love it all.  I could watch Vera Ellen dance all day, and I am thinking of convincing one of my sisters to put together an act with me so that we can do that “Sisters” song…

But most of all, I am determined to one day have a dress just like the one Rosemary Clooney wears when she sings “Love You Didn’t Do Right By Me.”

If I had loved during this time period I would want to be a singer at a club like this.  To wear beautiful dresses and sing beautiful songs every night would be my idea of the good life.

She’s a WOW

I have been researching the depiction of women in WW II propaganda posters for a new set of paintings.  Some of them are very familiar, like Rosie the Riveter, but others I had never seen before.  I just had to share a few of my favorites.  Pics are from allposters.com.

100 things

Have you ever seen illustrator Keri Smith’s list of 100 ideas?  I just love how simple and fun the ideas are, and yet so out of the ordinary from what most of us do every day.  Click over there to get some ideas from Keri’s list (and check out her illustrations), or make your own list.  Let me know how it goes!

That Rainy Day

For some reason I always feel like rainy days need a theme song more than other days.  Sunny or winter days are fun all on their own, but rainy days need a little musical accompaniment to get you through.  The torrential rains we have had the last couple of days have left me in desperate need of some rainy day music.  And no one can do it better than Frank!

At the coin laundry

I don’t know what it is, but I love laundromats.  I think I have a really romantic notion of them, as I have never lived anywhere where I had to use one.  Most likely, if you do use one regularly, you may think I am crazy.  These photos just serve to feed my obsession, though.  Maybe my next series of vintage paintings should be at the laundromat…

The Frame for your face

I met my friend Sara for lunch today, and she came bearing gifts- a card of vintage Sta Rite hair pins and some Lady Elaine hair nets she had found when her family had a garage sale this past weekend.  I am perpetually thinking about making changes to my hair, from changing its color, length, style, everything.  I would have a new hairstyle every month if I could afford it!

So, I decided today would be a hair day, with some tutorials from some of my favorite vintage ladies on the web!

Most days of the week, I wear my hair in some variation of Casey‘s style in this tutorial:

Although, today, my hair looks like this:

She had a tutorial of this style on her blog, but it is no longer there, and as I can’t read Dutch, I don’t know why…

I discovered this girl today, and I just love everything about her- her clothes, her glasses, not to mention her flawless hair.  Let’s see if I can figure out how she did this!

And finally, if you have never been over to the Bobby Pin Blog, go check it out.  She posts tons of photos of beautiful styles, and you can get her book, Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Modern Techniques.  My favorite post recently is when she discussed Lauren Bacall’s hair in the movie The Big Sleep.
